Layards Wharf

Layards Wharf is a market style food court which is unique in that it carries with it an element of history and magic by giving us a glimpse into a place that might have been.

Once we delved into the history of this vibrant corner of Colombo we were greatly inspired by the old canals that were an important route for traders and produce, the proximity to the Wellawatte spinning & weaving mills and by the people who called this area home.

We wanted to create an industrial space which was bustling with activity and was evocative of a food market that might have been, had the course of history changed ever so slightly. The design intent which was to resuse materials such as old pallets and crates have manifested itself in the stalls and spaces that have been created.
